The freedom, flexibility and adventure of a road trip makes this a great way to explore new places. Packing up the car and putting on a great playlist with the windows down sounds like a great time. However, like any trip, you need to be prepared for any situation. Make sure you are covered to avoid any unexpected bumps in the road and read our tips for road trip safety.
Prepare your vehicle
Whether you are renting a car or using your own, it is important to make sure the vehicle is in good condition. Check the tire pressure, lights and fluid levels before embarking on any journey. Before you leave, make sure you have a spare tire in good shape and any equipment needed if you need to change a flat on the road. If you will be in a rental car or one you don’t use frequently, make sure the seats and mirrors are adjusted to your needs. When filling up for gas, be aware of your next stop, you never want to have a low tank and no stations nearby!
Plan the route
With GPS maps on our phones, it can become easy to rely on technology to direct us from point A to B. Nevertheless, it is important that you are aware of your directions and keep a map or printout handy of where you are going, as you may drive through areas with poor or no cellular service. Mapping out your route before you leave is helpful to know the driving conditions. For example, look out for any construction sites along the way or toll routes you should be aware of. Try to share your itinerary with a friend or family at home and keep them updated on your progress to have someone aware of your whereabouts.

Stay rested
Safety should be your utmost priority while on a road trip and getting regular rest is a crucial element. There is nothing more dangerous than becoming sleepy at the wheel and getting off the road before this hits is essential. Make sure to get plenty of sleep before your trip and take regular breaks. If you have multiple drivers, try and switch frequently to keep everyone well-rested. Also, if possible try to avoid driving through the night or times where you tend to become sleepy. Stay awake to stay safe!
Be prepared for emergencies
When packing the car, emergency kits are extremely important in case of any situation. Make sure it includes essential items such as jumper cables, a first aid kit and flashlight. If driving in colder temperatures, keep extra blankets and layers handy for warmth if needed. If you have coverage for roadside assistance, have the contact details on you along with any other emergency phone numbers. Snacks, extra water and a charged cell phone are extremely valuable if stuck on the side of the road. You will be grateful to have these things with you if any emergency were to arise.

By taking the right steps in preparing before a road trip, you will be ready for any situation. Focusing on safety will allow for a more enjoyable and memorable experience for all of your passengers. All that’s left is picking your destination and hitting the road!
